THE latest episode of the Motorfocus Model Podcast takes a look at something all collectors ought to be mindful of when looking to secure a long sought-after old release.
In the Secondhand Market segment, Aaron Noonan and Dimitri Comino from Motorfocus Model Cars run through a list of rare and popular 1:18 scale releases that, for various reasons, have been known to develop faults as they age.
“We’re not having a crack at the model manufacturers,” Comino said.
“These are models that have developed problems over time through no fault of theirs.
“We’re talking about blistering on paint – in really bad cases we call it ‘die cast cancer’ – decals cracking, panels buckling and things like that.”
Several of the models mentioned in the episode are releases dating back to the early and mid-2000s that, in perfect condition, fetch several hundred dollars.
The episode also runs through the list of new model announcements from Acme, Biante and Classic Carlectables, more Bathurst 1000 and Bathurst 24 Hour trophies to pair with race-winning models, plus confirmation from Classic Carlectables of a couple of special new ranges celebrating milestones for some iconic Australian racing machinery.
There’s also some good news if you’re a collector of special releases from the Diecast Model Expo, an event that sadly will not go ahead in 2020.
The regular Q&A segment also covers a wide range of topics, including the potential for models of Supercars teams’ transporters, what happens to prototype models, Wacky Racers models, plus a host of queries on future touring car releases.
