Adaptability driving Morris’ Supercars dream

NASH Morris is set to race in a sixth different category this year as he takes a unique approach to chasing his Supercars dream.

The 20-year-old will be back on double duties this weekend at Queensland Raceway, tackling Porsche Sprint Challenge and GT4 Australia.

On top of those, ‘Flash’ has also raced in Super2, Trans Am and speedway this year – and isn’t done there.

“I believe I am going to do the Excel enduro at QR in a few weeks, so that will add to the list,” he told V8 Sleuth.

For that occasion, Morris is likely to team up with Alice Buckley, who took a three-from-three cleansweep of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia Scholarship Series round last weekend at QR.

Morris admits he wasn’t expecting such a diverse program this year.

“I knew we would probably do Super2 and Trans Am for selected rounds – we never really thought we were going to do the full campaign,” he said.

“It has been pretty cool to race such a huge amount of cars and it all helps, I believe.”

Morris said Norwell Motorplex, which is operated by his father Paul, has been crucial in helping him become adaptable enough to transition between categories.

“I think the big thing that has helped me is Norwell because you never know what the car and the track is going to handle like, so it’s great for teaching you how to adapt to different driving styles quickly,” he said.

“You might get in something that’s understeering one day and then the track changes in a few hours and it’s loose.”

Make no mistake though, Morris’ sights are fixed on the Repco Supercars Championship.

“My goal is still to get to Supercars,” he said.

“We haven’t put a timeline on it. Sometimes it takes people a year and a half, sometimes it takes people a bit longer.

“Because I never really raced karts or anything, I’ve still got a fair bit of learning to do and I’m not rushing it.”

Shannons SpeedSeries action at QR kicks off today, with Porsche Sprint Challenge and GT4/Australian Production Cars joined on the bill by TCR Australia, Trans Am, GT World Challenge Australia and the Kumho V8 Touring Car Series.
