Audi-Chev-Porsche-Ford: The 2023 Bathurst Supergrid

BRODIE Kostecki blasted to pole position for the 2023 Repco Bathurst 1000, but he doesn’t own the fastest qualifying lap of the weekend at Mount Panorama.

That honour belongs to Sports Sedan racer Jordan Caruso.

The 23-year-old professional gamer lapped the Mountain in 2:02.5436s during qualifying on Thursday aboard a wild Chev V8-powered Audi A4.

Caruso’s effort ended up over 1.7s quicker than the Supercars pole time, despite the Audi not appearing to have the right gearing for the track’s long straights.

It’s no surprise that the liberal Sports Sedan rules produced a quicker time than Supercars’ best.

But the move to the lower-downforce – and therefore slower – Gen3 cars this year makes for an interesting comparison against several support categories on the Mountain.

V8 Sleuth’s Will Dale has compiled the fastest times from each driver across the qualifying sessions for all categories to create a ‘Supergrid’.

Incredibly, the fastest four drivers on the resulting list represent four different categories: Sports Sedans, Supercars, Carrera Cup and Super2.

Caruso and Kostecki’s best times are followed by the pole laps from Harri Jones and Zak Best (Ford Mustang Gen2) in Carrera Cup and Super2 respectively.

They slot in ahead of the Top 10 Shootout efforts from Broc Feeney and Cam Waters, whose Gen3 Mustang fell 0.0750s short of its Best-driven Gen2 predecessor.

The below ‘Supergrid’ is presented with 28 cars, matching the number of entries for the Great Race.

It features two Sports Sedans (the other being Brad Shiels’ rapid Fiat 124!), four Super2 cars, six Carrera Cup Porsches and 16 Gen3 Supercars.

The 2023 Repco Bathurst 1000 will get underway at 11:15am local time.
