Bathurst 1000 grid, 2023: Where every car will start the race

THIS is how the Supercars grid will look when the 2023 Repco Bathurst 1000 starts on Sunday morning.

Brodie Kostecki continued his impressive run through the lead-up to the 60th anniversary ‘Great Race’ by storming to pole position in Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout.

He set the fastest time for a Gen3 Supercar yet around Mount Panorama aboard the #99 Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro, his 2m04.2719s lap securing the top spot for he and co-driver David Russell by almost half a second.

Pole, however, is not always a reliable indicator of who will stand on the podium on Sunday evening.

The car that started on grid position #1 has only won the race three times since 2009, although it has happened twice in the past four years, most recently in 2021.

Sandown 500 winners Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup complete the front row, with Cam Waters and James Moffat the first of the Fords starting off third, while James Golding/Dylan O’Keeffe and Anton De Pasquale/Tony D’Alberto rounding out the top five.

Shane van Gisbergen and Richie Stanaway will start sixth in the former’s last start in the race as a full-time driver.

Grove Racing locked out the fourth row, with David Reynolds/Garth Tander joined by the sister Mustang of Matt Payne/Kevin Estre, while the Fords of Chaz Mostert/Lee Holdsworth and Will Davison/Alex Davison round out the first five rows.

A handful of contenders will start the race from outside the top 10, headlined by Kostecki’s Erebus Motorsport teammate Will Brown.

A self-confessed “balls-up” in qualifying resulted in a crash at Griffins Bend and a 17th-place starting position for Brown and co-driver Jack Perkins.

However, just like starting from pole gives no guarantees for success, so too is starting down the grid no major impediment to winning the race; the 2016 race was won by the car that started in 17th.

Several former winners will also start outside the top 10, including Mark Winterbottom who will start 19th with Michael Caruso, and Craig Lowndes who will start 20th with Zane Goddard.

The Repco Bathurst 1000 is scheduled to start at 11:15am AEDT on Sunday morning.
