Best extends lead, Allen wins Dunlop Series’ 150th round

HE might have been run down by Zak Best in Race 2 but that couldn’t stop Kai Allen from becoming the youngest Super2 round winner in history.

Townsville marked a milestone occasion for the Dunlop Series as the 150th round in its history.

Pole-sitter Allen led for the bulk of the Sunday race before Best grabbed the lead at Turn 2 on Lap 22.

That moment proved timely, given the Safety Car would soon be deployed after an issue for Super3 veteran Chris Smerdon with six minutes remaining.

From there, Best cruised to victory from Allen, with Zane Morse a fine third.

That result, combined with the Race 1 win on Saturday, was enough for Allen to take the round honours.

It’s the latest accolade for the 18-year-old, who has long been earmarked as a star of the future and last year dominated in Super3.

A crash in the Adelaide finale ultimately cost him the third-tier title, which instead went the way of Brad Vaughan, but Allen has continued to impress upon graduating to Super2.

Allen is now second in the championship, 66 points adrift of Best.

Super3 young gun Cameron McLeod meanwhile continued to shine, finishing outright seventh.
