De Pasquale on top as Heimgartner misses cut

A STUNNING last-ditch lap from Anton De Pasquale has given him the Sunday provisional pole position and bumped the inaugural Taupō race winner out of the Shootout in the process.

De Pasquale was outside the top 10 with the chequered flag showing, only to complete his final lap in 1:27.0928s to surge to the top of the timesheets.

Heimgartner had moments earlier knocked Saturday polesitter Cam Waters out of the Shootout, with the #8 Camaro and #6 Mustang to share the sixth row of the grid this afternoon.

With conditions relatively dry, Brodie Kostecki and Matt Payne found their way to the front during the first half of the 15-minute session and it was the latter who headed proceedings going into crunch time.

Payne improved to ultimately place fourth behind De Pasquale, Chaz Mostert and Will Brown while Ryan Wood and Tim Slade backed up their strong Saturday qualifying form in fifth and seventh.

Wedged between them was Broc Feeney in his best result of the Taupō weekend to date, and rounding out the top 10 was Brodie Kostecki, Jack Le Brocq and Thomas Randle.

Other than Heimgartner and Waters, the key omission from the Shootout will be Saturday runner-up Will Davison, who could do no better than 18th.

Bringing up the rear of the field for a second successive day was Nick Percat, as Matt Stone Racing’s hero-to-zero weekend continues.

Next up is the Top 10 Shootout from 10:25am AEST (12:25pm local) before the second and final 60-lap race of the weekend kicks off at 1:05pm AEST (3:05pm local).
