Erebus teen targeting step up in 2023

REEF McCarthy is plotting a full 2023 Dunlop Super2 Series campaign after making it through his second-tier debut at Mount Panorama.

McCarthy stepped into the #999 Image Racing/Erebus Academy Holden in place of Jaylyn Robotham, who was focusing on his maiden Repco Bathurst 1000.

The 18-year-old, who won a Super3 race at The Mountain last year, delivered a solid display, qualifying 12th of the 16 Super2 competitors and finishing 13th.

“I started off the weekend well and was super happy to get some dry running in Practice 2,” McCarthy said.

“Sadly, I didn’t get any wet running in the Super2 prior to the weekend so that was a whole new learning curve for myself.

“I was really looking forward to the wet racing though, I showed good pace in the wet on Friday but sadly we weren’t able to get out on track (on Saturday).”

Having spent 2022 racing in Formula Vee, McCarthy hopes to be a regular presence on the Super2 grid next season.

“Moving forward, I’m currently looking for options to get myself in a Super2 next year,” he said.

“I think with my ultimate goal being the main game, that’s my next step.”

Robotham will return to the cockpit of the #999 VF Commodore at the season-ending Adelaide 500.

His Super2 absence at Bathurst has seen Robotham slide to 11th in the standings, two places behind teammate Jay Hanson.
