Super3 young gun storms to Bathurst pole by five seconds

TYLER Everingham will start the final Dunlop Super2 Series race at the Repco Bathurst 1000 from pole position, while young gun Kai Allen stormed to pole in the Super3 class by a record margin.

Everingham’s second pole of the season headlines an all-Nissan front row with Matt Payne set to start alongside.

While the expected rain stayed away throughout the session, wet patches and cool temperatures made conditions tricky for both Super2 and Super3 Series runners.

Everingham went out early in Q2 and turned lap after lap before watching the close of the session from the pits, his 2m07.5959s effort holding up against all challenges.

Zak Best and Cameron Hill complete the second row, ahead of championship leader Declan Fraser who lodged a late flyer that vaulted him from outside the top 10 into fifth on the grid alongside Jay Hanson.

The Q2 session for Super2 runners was largely uneventful, save for Matt McLean grazing the Sulman Park wall on his way to seventh, while Reef McCarthy gave the same wall a harder whack that left him unable to improve on a time that left him 16th on the grid.

The MW Motorsport crew repaired Angelo Mouzouris’ Altima overnight after its heavy crash in Race 1, the youngster rewarding their efforts with 11th on the grid.

SUPER3 – Allen smokes the field by record margin

Kai Allen added another pole position to his collection for 2022, and this time by a record-shattering margin.

The Eggleston Motorsport pilot topped Saturday morning’s Q1 session, his ninth pole of the season coming with a margin of 5.4140 seconds. It’s a new category record, almostdoubling the old margin of 2.2 seconds set by Nash Morris at Sydney Motorsport Park last year.

“They were tricky conditions out there with some wet patches – had a few moments over the top!” Allen, whose time held up for eighth on the overall grid, said.

Next best were a pair of retro-liveried Falcons, Dave Murphy’s Team Vodafone-liveried BF edging Ray Hislop’s FPR-liveried FG by just under 0.3s.

The session was disastrous for Super3 title contender Brad Vaughan, who slid into the wall above the Dipper on what was supposed to be his first flying lap of the session.

“I’d already made a blue on my lap at Turn 1 so I was taking it easy, I was just in first gear and it snapped away from me,” Vaughan said.

“I’m not sure if something broke or I hit a puddle.”

The final Dunlop Series race of the Bathurst 1000 weekend gets underway at 4:00pm AEDT.
