Feeney defies scare to lead final Supercars practice

BROC Feeney has put Triple Eight on top in the last hitout before qualifying at the MSS Security Melbourne SuperSprint.

A 1:47.3057s was good enough for Feeney, who survived a scare in the form of a side-on touch of the wall at Albert Park’s Turn 8.

Cam Waters and Anton De Pasquale were pretty well straight into the 1:47s bracket, but it took until almost the halfway point of the 30-minute session for the Practice 1 benchmark to be knocked off.

The man responsible was Chaz Mostert, whose happy start to the season aboard Walkinshaw Andretti United’s #25 Mustang has continued.

Mostert banked a 1:47.4623s which had him still the best part of four tenths up on the field when the final flying laps got underway 10-plus minutes later.

The best of the late improvers was Broc Feeney, who denied Waters top spot by 0.0026s with a time that went close to besting the Gen3 record lap at Albert Park (1:47.2537s by Shane van Gisbergen last year).

Mostert had to settle for fifth in the end, Anton De Pasquale and Andre Heimgartner also popping up the leaderboard late.

The session again ran green throughout.

Blanchard Racing Team rookie Aaron Love did though survive a run through the gravel at Turn 12 to place 20th.

The first of two 15-minute qualifying sessions today is scheduled to start at 3:10pm AEDT.
