Feeney tops final practice ahead of Sandown 500 qualifying

BROC Feeney has topped the final practice session ahead of Supercars qualifying for the Sandown 500.

The Triple Eight pilot set the fastest time of the weekend so far in Practice 4, leading a Camaro sweep of the top three positions of the half-hour session.

The order changed rapidly in the final three minutes as drivers embarked on qualifying simulations runs, with Feeney’s final lap putting him 0.15 seconds clear of Erebus driver Will Brown, while Tim Slade was another late improver to put his PremiAir Racing machine third.

Cam Waters was the best of the Fords in fourth place, the Tickford driver 0.23 seconds off Feeney’s mark.

The Mustangs of Thomas Randle and David Reynolds were fifth and sixth ahead of the second PremiAir Camaro of James Golding, with Will Davison, Shane van Gisbergen and Zane Goddard rounding out the top 10.

Interestingly, the #97 Camaro’s best time was actually set by co-driver Richie Stanaway early in the session, with van Gisbergen one of the few drivers not to complete a qualifying simulation as the chequered flag neared.

Another to skip the new-tyre runs was championship leader Brodie Kostecki, who finished the session down in 25th after electing to focus on race setup.

While some teams ran both their primary and co-drivers during the session, Feeney remained aboard the #88 throughout.

Feeney’s time also came following a radiator change prior to the session, the Triple Eight crew swapping it out in half an hour after noticing a leak when the car was being warmed up.

The Supercars are next on-track at 1:40pm AEST for a 20-minute qualifying session ahead of this afternoon’s Top 10 Shootout.
