GRM’s groundbreaking Calder Park test

GARRY Rogers Motorsport has taken its latest step towards introducing new technology to the TCR Australia Series.

GRM headed to Calder Park in mid-June to test the hybrid and push-to-pass systems set to debut Down Under in 2024.

The team’s spare Peugeot, the car which Frenchman Teddy Clairet raced last year at Bathurst, was used for the test with James Moffat hopping behind the wheel.

Some teething issues were experienced with software and a bearing but all in all GRM director Barry Rogers hailed it a positive outing.

“It’s going to add another dimension to the racing when it comes in,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“The push-to-pass system and the rules and how it’s going to be integrated into the racing probably isn’t totally clear yet but I think the lower down the grid you are the more push-to-passes you will get.

“I think that’s the plan with it.

“Without other cars out there without it on, just working out exactly what impact that has, that will come in future testing.

“But I think 15kw, which is roughly 25hp on a car that’s got nearly 270hp… if that’s a big enough difference, we’ll know in time whether it needs to be more or whatever.”

GRM is also designing and manufacturing a new Peugeot 308 TCR for which it will be the exclusive global provider.

Rogers added praise for Calder Park, expressing interest in seeing Australian Racing Group categories such as TCR, S5000 and Trans Am compete at the historic venue in future.

Calder Park is due to host state-level racing later this year, including next month holding its first Victorian Motor Racing Championship event since 2008.
