Johnson upbeat despite practice crash

JETT Johnson is not letting an unfortunate practice crash put a dampener on his Dunlop Super3 Series debut in Newcastle.

The Nissan driver was left with nowhere to go when Matt Chahda crashed ahead of him at Turn 9 during the final quarter of Practice 2.

“We’ll be back out, it’s just airbox, radiator, front bar, chassis rail extensions, a couple of other bits and pieces that we need,” Johnson told V8 Sleuth.

“We’ll get some new bits, bolt them on and have another crack tomorrow.”

Of the incident itself, the 18-year-old recalled: “Matt was up going through the staircase, I was coming out of Turn 8 and he was just heading into 9.

“Obviously it’s a blind corner and I couldn’t see him, I came around and it happened really quickly.

“I just didn’t have any time to react and even if I did I wouldn’t have been able to steer the car out of the way.

“Unfortunately, it’s racing. It would be nice if every day was sunshine and rainbows but it happens and we have just got to make the best of a bad situation.”

On the whole, Johnson was upbeat about his opening day of competition in a Supercar.

“It really couldn’t have gone any better up until that point,” he said.

“Session one I just found my feet and got confident with the track pretty quickly and then session two we did another run on the same tyres, went really good.

“We bolted a set of greens on and unfortunately just wasn’t able to do a lap until all of that happened.

“The lap up until that point when we obviously had that accident, it was really quick, all my lines were good, I seemed to have sorted a lot of stuff out in the car as well set-up wise, so I’m really happy with it.

“It feels like a really competitive car and I have got a lot more to work on with my driving over the weekend too so hopefully we can stay up the pointy end of Super3 and just try to learn along the way.”

The Dunlop Series returns to the track tomorrow for qualifying from 10:25am local time (AEDT).
