Jones: New Chevrolet engine map test ‘a disaster’

THE trial of a new Chevrolet engine map in opening practice at Hidden Valley proved disastrous, according to Macauley Jones.

While Ford has been chipping away at calibration performance improvements for some time, one thing their counterparts have been hunting is a fix for idling issues.

But the settings the 15 Chevrolets ran in Practice 1 this morning at the Darwin Triple Crown were reversed for the afternoon hitout, with Jones indicating why.

“Practice 1 was exciting, it’s like a bull in a china shop. It was pretty loose in Practice 1,” said the #96 Brad Jones Racing driver.

“Obviously the mapping stuff was a bit of a disaster with rear locking and compression lock with the blipping not being too strong.

“So that was a bit of a challenge to work around it really disrupted the flow.”

BJR was arguably the best of the Chevrolet squads in Practice 2, with Andre Heimgartner (sixth), Bryce Fullwood (eighth) and Jones (10th) representing three of the four leading Camaro drivers.

“The car on the green tyres is pretty good,” noted Jones.

“I think the deg here is reasonably high so it’s going to be an interesting race, I think for managing tyres.”

Practice 2 was topped by Anton De Pasquale, with Tickford Racing’s James Courtney and Cam Waters his nearest threats.
