Kiwi closes in on American open-wheel record

RISING New Zealand talent Callum Hedge is marching towards a record-breaking feat in his American open-wheel exploits.

Hedge has now won seven successive races in the Formula Regional Americas Championship following his sweep of Round 3 at Mid-Ohio on the weekend.

That puts him within striking distance of the category’s record winning streak of eight, shared by Kyle Kirkwood in 2018 and Linus Lundqvist in 2020.

Kirkwood is now an IndyCar race winner while Lundqvist last year clinched the second-tier Indy Lights crown.

Hedge’s effort came after a 40-plus-hour mission to get to Ohio from Darwin, where he took results of fourth, second and second in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia to consolidate his hold on third in the standings.

His weekend in Mid-Ohio was actually helped by a downpour which forced the grid to be set based on championship rankings – and he took full toll.

“Another almost perfect weekend with three wins,” said Hedge.

“Very happy to be on such a good streak and it’s super cool to be able to have success in championships on different continents within one week.”

On hopping between a tin top and an open-wheeler, he added: “I do a lot of driving between different cars all the time, and I really think it benefits my race craft.

“Over the years, I have learned to adapt my driving very quickly.

“Obviously the two cars are very different but for me I tend to carry over the same driving fundamentals between every car I drive and finetune from there.”

Round 4 of the Formula Regional Americas Championship will be held at New Jersey Motorsports Park on July 28-30.

Before then, he’ll be back in action in Carrera Cup, which will race in Townsville across July 7-9.
