Mawson’s move in pursuit of matching hero Skaife

JOEY Mawson’s tilt at a third Gold Star will come in different colours thanks to a new-for-2023 partnership.

Mawson will this season be behind the wheel of an 88Racing S5000 car, albeit fielded by Team BRM with whom Mawson has shone the last couple of years.

Firmly in his sights is a title three-peat which would put him in exclusive company; Bib Stillwell, John McCormack, Alfredo Costanzo, Mark Skaife and Paul Stokell being the only drivers in history to have won three or more Gold Stars.

The prospect of drawing level with Skaife – a known fan of Mawson’s – is particularly enticing.

“The chance to compete for a third Australian Drivers’ Championship is special,” said Mawson.

“When I look back at the history books, some have done the double but becoming a three-time champion puts you in elite company.

“Mark Skaife won it three times and he was a hero of mine when I was growing up, so to have the chance to emulate that is special.

“It’s a huge challenge, but an incredible opportunity for the year.

“Every year there are new drivers and competition, every year the level goes up and up and it gets harder to stay on top.”

As for the new 88Racing/Team BRM combination, Mawson said: “Being in the same paddock I’ve got to know Albert (Callegher, 88Racing owner) in the past and when he came forward with this plan to Mark (Rundle of Team BRM), I thought about it and it was all positives.

“It’s really exciting and will be quite cool to be in new colours and representing 88Racing and continuing on with Team BRM as well for a third season.

“I’ve always loved to be part of S5000, it’s my favourite category I’ve been in and to come back is truly a blessing.”

Jordan Boys, Elly Morrow, Cooper Webster and Josh Fife are among the drivers to have previously competed for 88Racing.

The S5000 season opens at Symmons Plains across February 24-26.
