Murph Jr makes Australian racing transition

THE son of four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Greg Murphy has locked in the next step of his blossoming motorsport career – and it will come on this side of the Tasman.

Ronan Murphy has signed with Sonic Motor Racing Services to race in the 2023 Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, which acts as a stepping stone to Carrera Cup in Australia.

The 21-year-old’s move up from the New Zealand Toyota 86 series puts him into an environment which has proven successful for countless rising stars.

“I’m super pumped to join Team Sonic and join the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge for 2023,” said Murphy.

“It’s my first time racing in Australia and I couldn’t be more stoked to be doing it and joining a team like Sonic for the season.

“A huge thank you to Michael and Maria Ritter for the opportunity and all my supporters who have made this happen.”

Murphy took part in a test yesterday at Phillip Island and has high hopes for the year ahead.

“My goal for the season is just to get some really good consistent results and see where we end up in the championship, ideally in the top five somewhere,” he said.

“Hopefully we will be fighting at the front come the season’s end.”

As for following in the footsteps of his famous father?

“I certainly respect everything Dad has done in his time in Australia,” he added.

“He obviously had a half-decent run at things but for sure I’m here to do my own thing and just do the best I can with what I have and the people around me and the support I’ve got and see how far it takes me.

“Just give it 110 percent, take every opportunity and hopefully we will come out of it successful in the end.”

Murphy will form part of a three-pronged Sonic outfit in PMSC, joining Marcus Flack and returnee Harrison Goodman.
