MUSTANG, ZB TO RACE AGAINST CURRENT SUPER2 CARS IN 2023

SEVEN different Car of the Future models will be eligible to compete in the Dunlop Super2 Series in 2023, Supercars has confirmed.

The Gen2 Holden Commodore ZB and Ford Mustang are set to join Super2 next year to coincide with the Supercars Championship’s introduction of Gen3.

While that has long been flagged, it’s now been agreed by the Supercars Commission that the current Super2 cars will remain in the second tier and fight against the newer models.

They are the Holden Commodore VF, Ford Falcon FG X and Nissan Altima L33, while the currently unraced Mercedes AMG E63 and Volvo S60 also technically remain eligible.

With Supercars opting not to push those cars down to Super3, the third tier will continue to be the domain of the Project Blueprint (2012 and older) machinery.

The Super2 and Super3 fields will though continue to take part in the same races, as has been the case since midway through 2020.

Supercars Head of Motorsport Adrian Burgess explained the decision had been made after consultation with team owners.

“After speaking with both Repco Supercars Championship and Dunlop Super2 Series teams, we are aware that some are ready to commit to ZB Commodores and Ford Mustangs immediately, while others will remain committed to current programs in 2023,” he said.

“This decision benefits teams in both of those positions and paves the way for more teams and drivers to enter our second-tier competition in 2023.

“This combined Dunlop Super2/Dunlop Super3 Series category gives drivers the opportunity to become more familiar with how to race Supercars.

“The primary focus for us is around the driver pathway, a commitment which Dunlop shares.”

The 2022 Dunlop Series continues in Townsville this weekend with a 32-car entry; 17 in the Super2 category in 15 in Super3.
