Penalty issued for title-altering Super2 clash

THE stewards have taken action on the Sandown incident which threatened to turn the Super2 title race on its head.

After a tame Saturday Super2 encounter, all hell broke loose yesterday – headlined by a three-car collision down the back straight as Aaron Love, Ryan Wood and Brad Vaughan squabbled for the lead.

While that matter went unpunished, a crucial clash several laps earlier did not.

Privateer Zane Morse was docked 35 championship points after punting Zak Best into the gravel at Turn 9.

Morse had been sizing up a Lap 6 move on fourth-placed Best when it went awry.

While Morse was forced to retire from the race with damage, the implications for Best were even more serious given his ongoing title battle.

Having entered Race 2 at Sandown with an 84-point series lead, Best at one stage looked a chance of losing the advantage altogether to Kai Allen.

A recovery drive helped avoid that scenario, with Best limiting the damage to keep the margin at 33 points with two rounds remaining.

“Following a DRD post-race investigation with the driver of Car 11 Zane Morse and his admission to making contact with Car 17 at turn 9 causing Car 17 to spin and losing multiple positions, the Stewards imposed a loss of 35 Driver Series Points on Zane Morse,” read a stewards report.

Morse is ninth in the standings.

Just 90 points now separates the top four, with Best and Allen followed by Sandown race winners Wood and Murray.

Mount Panorama will host the penultimate round of the season, before an Adelaide decider in November.
