PremiAir signing’s long-awaited breakthrough

AT age 42, David Russell has broken through for his maiden Porsche Carrera Cup Australia round win.

After 14 podiums (second or third) in his first 59 events, Russell finally got the job done to stand on the top step this weekend at Taupō.

The TekworkX Motorsport driver won the opening two races and was second to Jackson Walls in the finale.

The results have elevated him to second in the overall standings, just 11 points behind leader Harri Jones.

“It’s a great feeling to come away with the round win,” said Russell, who recently made a surprise Supercars co-driving switch from Erebus Motorsport to PremiAir Racing.

“The AGP was down in the points so we’re looking at the long game but to get a round win is a bonus.

“To finally have it is good – we’ve had plenty of wins and podiums but to get the monkey off the back is good and hopefully we can continue to keep rolling with it now.

“Big thanks to the guys at TekworkX, they’ve given me a great car this weekend and I just had to execute as best I could.

“I just face-timed (team owner Rob Woods) and he’s in great spirits.”

Completing the round podium was Walls and Nash Morris.

Next up on the Carrera Cup calendar is Hidden Valley in June.
