THE Shane van Gisbergen contract extension which Triple Eight trumpeted as “multi-year” has actually only locked the Kiwi in until the end of 2024.
Van Gisbergen hinted at the revelation during a television interview with Supercars broadcast host Jess Yates.
While it is likely that options are involved, V8 Sleuth understands it is indeed the case that the hard-and-fast element of the deal is only a one-year addition.
“It was awesome, easy chats with Jamie (Whincup, team principal),” van Gisbergen said of negotiations.
“Obviously there are attractions and the grass is greener at them moment to have a look at new challenges.
“I had some chats with people outside of the sport, it was good.
“At least one more year here, which is cool. Yeah, contracts…”

Intrigue had surrounded van Gisbergen’s future, given his discontent around the Gen3 platform.
Triple Eight’s recent announcement does at least ensure it will carry an unchanged driver line-up into next year.
