Richards’ grandson walks away from Tailem Bend rollover

THE grandson of seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner Jim Richards has walked away from a nasty incident at The Bend Motorsport Park.

Teenager Jett Blumeris was racing in the Excel Challenge on the weekend as part of the SA Motorsport Series bill featuring the Australian debut of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia category.

Having finished eighth and seventh in the opening two Excel races of the weekend, it was Race 3 yesterday where things went awry for Blumeris.

He was running sixth on Lap 4 when he was pitched into a prolonged rollover through the Turn 11/12 complex.

Blend Line TV cameras picked up the back end of the incident, but it was unclear exactly how the prang began.

Live vision was captured on the broadcast, accessible below with a timestamp of 4:16:07 (plus replays at 4:19:21 and 4:20:19).

Blumeris quickly emerged from the wreckage, but his #22 Excel was left looking worse for wear.

It was a big weekend for another of Richards’ grandsons, as Clay Richards (son of Steve) made his debut in TCR Australia.

Richards was on the back foot early as a power steering issue forced him out of opening practice, but he rebounded to qualify 11th.

From there he finished ninth in Race 1, before he capitalised on the reverse top 10 grid Race 2 format to take a fine second place.

Richards was a DNF in the third and final encounter, owing to a broken lower control arm.
