Robotham to race ex-Tickford Mustang

JAYLYN Robotham will be on the Dunlop Super2 Series grid in Newcastle next month after all.

The 20-year-old made the switch from Super2 to the Trans Am Series this year, scoring a round podium on debut in the SpeedSeries category last weekend at Symmons Plains.

However, he’s now inked a one-round deal to drive MW Motorsport’s newly acquired ex-Tickford Racing Mustang for Newcastle.

Matt McLean had been expected to secure that seat after recently testing the car at Winton.

Robotham has history with MWM, dominating the shortened Super3 season with the team in 2020 aboard an FG Falcon.

The Mustang Robotham will race in Newcastle finished the 2022 Supercars Championship in the hands of James Courtney, scoring a podium on Saturday in Adelaide.

It’d started 2022 as Thomas Randle’s Castrol entry and was briefly driven by Fernando Alonso at Albert Park, before being sidelined by a major startline crash at The Bend.

Cameron Waters had earlier raced it for three seasons from 2018, debuting the car as a Falcon FG X before it was reskinned to a Mustang the following year.

Courtney campaigned it throughout 2021 and then was reunited with the repaired chassis for the final two rounds of last season.

MWM’s entry is one of six Tickford-built Mustangs expected to feature in Newcastle’s Super2 field.

Tickford is running Brad Vaughan and Elly Morrow, while Zane Morse, Aaron Love and James Masterton will also race Mustangs originally built by the team.
