Supercars announces driver eligibility rule change

SUPERCARS has confirmed a change to its driver eligibility rules aimed at expanding the pathway into the main game.

As previously reported by V8 Sleuth, the change has been in the works and there’s already two young guns set to benefit: Kai Allen and Aaron Love.

Effectively, a top three championship finish in a Super3 or Porsche Carrera Cup Australia season in the past three years will be counted as the equivalent of three Super2 rounds.

That’s significant given that Supercars mandates, on top of having a Motorsport Australia licence, that any driver without a Platinum or Gold FIA licence must have completed six Super2 rounds to be eligible.

Thus, Allen (second in 2022 Super3) and Love (second in 2022 Carrera Cup Australia) are now eligible for this year’s enduros, given they have also contested the opening three rounds of the 2023 Super2 Series.

Allen and Love are in line to spearhead wildcards for Dick Johnson Racing and the Blanchard Racing Team, respectively.

Among other drivers who will now become eligible thanks to the rule change being implemented effective immediately are Brad Vaughan (2022 Super3 champion) and Cooper Murray (2021 Carrera Cup Australia runner-up).

The full amendment to Rule A5.1.3.3 in the Supercars Operations Manual reads as follows:

The following criteria will be permitted to a maximum of three (3) Dunlop Super2 Rounds:

i.          A Driver having competed in and be one of the first three (3) of the final classification of that Supercars Australia Super3 Series in the last three (3) years, will be credited with three (3) DS2 Rounds towards the six (6) DS2 Rounds as required by Rule A5.1.3.3.

ii.         A Driver having competed in and be one of the first three (3) of the final classification of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Series in the last three (3) years, will be credited with three (3) DS2 Rounds towards the six (6) DS2 Rounds as required by Rule A5.1.3.3.
