Supercars announces event formats, 28-race season

THE 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will comprise of 28 races, with the category revealing its various event formats this afternoon.

Few are a surprise, although one outlier is noticeable: practice in Perth.

There will only be one Supercars session prior to qualifying this year at Wanneroo Raceway; however, that sole practice will span 90 minutes.

Breaking down the details in chronological order, Newcastle will feature a pair of 250km races, both of which will come after a Top 10 Shootout.

There will again be four sprint races at Albert Park, the Thursday leg running for 100km. Race 2 will cover 80km, with 70km distances for the final two encounters.

A trio of 100km races will be the format for Rounds 3-5 at Perth, Tasmania and Darwin, and then Round 8 at The Bend.

In between, Townsville mirrors the Newcastle format (as do Gold Coast and Adelaide later on), while Sydney Motorsport Park will host a 200km night race and a 140km daylight race.

Four marquee events close out the season: the Sandown 500, Repco Bathurst 1000, Gold Coast and Adelaide.

Top 10 Shootouts for each of those races makes it 10 one-lap dashes for the year.

There is also confirmation that the Sandown qualifying races will be no longer.

Across the board, there will again be a mix of qualifying systems in use.

On most occasions, an all-in hitout will decide the grid (at least pre-Shootout). Supercars’ F1-style three-part knockout format will be used four times, for the opening races at Perth, Darwin, Sydney and The Bend.

Nine of the 12 rounds will see Supercars on track for at least three days, the exceptions being Tasmania, Sydney and The Bend.

The season opens with the Thrifty Newcastle 500 across March 10-12.
