Supercars expecting new GM Gen3 chapter for 2026

SUPERCARS is expecting a new General Motors chapter of championship history to begin in 2026.

With production of the sixth-generation Camaro road car ceasing next year, Supercars has committed to running the Chevrolet model until the end of 2025.

There is no clear plan just yet for life after the Camaro, but Supercars CEO Shane Howard is sure the General Motors versus Ford rivalry is far from done.

“There will be a new chapter and we’re excited about that,” said Howard.

“GM have got no intention of going anywhere and they are fully supportive of Supercars.

“We look forward to what their next iteration will be… we’re in GM’s hands for that, of course.

“GM will be working on that not only with us but NASCAR and their other motorsport entities as to what that plan will be.”

While the Camaro news did not come as a surprise to the industry, Supercars had been full steam ahead on getting Gen3 off the ground instead of panicking about finding a successor.

“The design process has been going on for over two years, there’s over 30,000 design files in regard to the development and specifications of these cars,” Howard said of Gen3.

“It does have flexibility in it to accommodate other manufacturer models and styles.

“You look at how it has evolved; our chassis was restrictive, I think we all know the effect that had on the overall design of the cars when we shifted from four-door to two-door.

“I think the platform that we have got now, it reflects more the DNA of the car in a showroom and it has certainly got that pin-up appeal of a gorgeous looking race car.”

While noting the category is open to hybridisation down the track, Howard said there’s no hard timeline on that.

What there is a minimum timeline for, however, is the Gen3 platform.

“You look at the previous platforms, they’ve run 10 years. But certainly five years,” he said.
