Supercars shows off new electric Safety Car

SUPERCARS will move to an all-electric Porsche Taycan GTS as its Safety Car from next weekend’s Thrifty Bathurst 500.

That represents a category-first, with two Taycans to be rotated between at each event and a bp pulse EV charging station present in pitlane.

It’s the latest step in Supercars’ sustainability efforts, following a switch to E75 racing fuel and the launch of a tyre recycling partnership.

“This collaboration between the Repco Supercars Championship, Porsche, and bp pulse represents a significant milestone for the Championship,” said Supercars chief operating officer Tim Watsford.

“Introducing the Porsche Taycan GTS as our official Safety Car, and the first electric Safety Car in Supercars history, showcases our shared dedication to innovation, sustainability, and delivering a world-class racing experience.”

Capable of reaching 250km/h and accelerating from 0-100 in 3.7 seconds, the Taycan replaces the Ford Raptor Ranger which operated as the 2023 Safety Car.

“The Porsche Taycan GTS stands as an extraordinary engineering achievement in its own right, representing a recent stride in Porsche’s rich history of ground-breaking innovation,” said Porsche Cars Australia motorsport manager Barry Hay.

“To put this car on display at the pinnacle of Australian motorsport in front of the millions who attend and watch Supercars races is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what the Porsche Taycan GTS is capable of.

“As race fans, we rarely like to see the bp pulse Safety Car on-track, but we are looking forward to having the Porsche Taycan GTS play such an integral a role in Supercars events from 2024 onward.”

A BMW XM is the Safety Car for this weekend’s Repco Bathurst 12 Hour, in line with a two-year deal through 2025 between the German marque and the Mount Panorama GT3 event.
