Taupo tipped to suit Supercars

THE Gen3 Supercars will be well suited to putting on a show at Taupo Motorsport Park, according to Team 18 manager Bruin Beasley.

Besides being the man who has led Team 18’s resurgence, Beasley’s opinion has particular relevance when it comes to New Zealand motorsport given his involvement in what is now known as the Castrol Formula Regional Oceania Championship.

Beasley is the team principal of MTEC Motorsport, which is a regular competitor in the New Zealand-based open-wheel series and has delivered multiple race wins.

Taupo will host its maiden Repco Supercars Championship round next year, likely in April.

“It will be really good,” Beasley told V8 Sleuth.

“It has got some nice flowing stuff and some fast stuff and some slow stuff. It was basically redeveloped and done for A1GP.”

He doubled down by saying it’s the best option to succeed Pukekohe as New Zealand’s new home of Supercars, having faced competition from the likes of Hampton Downs.

“I think with these cars it’s probably the best replacement,” Beasley added.

“Puke was a great track but as a venue it was probably fairly dated, there was a lot of facilities that weren’t amazing.

“Taupo has got good facilities, good location, great track and when you go into Taupo itself, it’s like going into a nice little holiday town.

“It’s picturesque, it’s cool, it’s got a bit going on. It’s just a good place to be.”

Taupo will become the third Kiwi venue to host a Supercars Championship round, following Pukekohe and the Hamilton Street Circuit.
