The eye-opening element to Tim Edwards’ gig

THE best part of six months into his new chapter, Tim Edwards has revealed the one element of the Supercars general manager of motorsport role that has proven an “eye-opener”.

“I’m now there in the, you might say, envious position of being able to sit there and monitor the data for all 24 cars and look at them and go ‘well I wouldn’t be doing that’ and ‘that’s good what they’re doing’,” Edwards said on this week’s Motorsport News Podcast.

“Sometimes you feel like going down and saying to people ‘don’t do that’ but unfortunately that’s not my responsibility, they have got to make their own decisions.

“But it is quite interesting looking at the data for all 24 cars.”

It’s that very aspect which Edwards highlighted when pressed by host Will Dale on what part of the job had surprised him.

“I didn’t realise how much visibility they actually have of the teams and how they’re watching it live,” admitted the former Tickford Racing boss.

“That’s been a bit of an eye-opener, that on one screen you look at 24 different ways of doing the same thing, for want of a better term.”

Edwards touches on several other topics in the episode, from the hold-up in carrying out transient dyno testing to his thoughts on the long-awaited first full race for the new Dunlop wet tyre.
