The ‘new, old’ V8 Commodore rally car

VICTORIAN rally driver, Braeden Kendrick, is set to debut a freshly built VN Commodore that’s been built like a V8 Supercar.

The second-generation Holden driver has thrilled rally fans in recent seasons in a rock-throwing VK Commodore, but he’s set to up the ante even further with a Milldun Motorsport-built car that has had no expense spared.

It made its first public appearance at the recent Rally Retro Festival where it took fans by storm.

“To be honest, I like the bigger car, so we wanted to do something even cooler than our VK rally car, and just have a bigger body, but try and make it do incredible things,” Kendrick said.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to punt it pretty fast, and we can show up a few Escorts in the big family sedan!”

The new build started with a bog-standard Commodore Executive body shell prior to having an extensive roll cage installed, while fabrication work and seam welding are a work of art.

“I had a vision of where it was going to end up, but I suppose when I started building it I didn’t even know what these guys (Milldun) were capable of. It’s practically a V8 Supercar now,” he says.

Safety has been a key component of the build process with both driver and co-driver seats positioned further back in the car and closer to the transmission tunnel.

The steering column and the pedal box have also been moved further back to tie in with the re-positioning of the seats, while a fully enclosed fuel cell is mounted over the back axles to assist further with weight distribution.

The Commodore will use a Chevrolet 5.7-litre LS1 that’s been de-stroked, with power fed through a six-speed sequential gearbox.
