Top three grid slots to be vacant at Albert Park

THERE will be a quirk to the Supercars starting procedure next week at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

Regulations for Round 2 of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship have outlined that the pole-sitter for each of the four sprint races will start from fourth on the Albert Park grid.

This is due to visibility issues out of the Gen3 cockpit in being able to see the start lights.

“The grid will be a 1×1 formation with pole position for Supercars on the right-hand side (in the F1 position 4th place),” rules now read.

“The first three (3) F1 grid positions will be left vacant.”

The change does have the double effect of giving the Supercars pole-sitter the inside line into the initial right-hander at the opening chicane.

A Supercars race will be held on each of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday next week in what is the championship’s highest points-paying round.

That’s because there will be four lots of fastest lap bonuses (five points per race), making for a potential 320 points available to any one driver across the event.

The winner of each race will be awarded 75 points.
