SHANE van Gisbergen has continued his hot run of form by topping Sunday qualifying at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
In a repeat of the Saturday format at Surfers Paradise, a 20-minute qualifying session set the field for a Top 10 Shootout ahead of the afternoon’s 250km race.
Van Gisbergen moved to the top of the order halfway through the running, clocking 1:10.4856s.
That time came moments after Tim Slade tagged the wall at Turn 11. The session remained green, despite the left-front spring popping out of the Mustang.
Three minutes later Will Davison lowered van Gisbergen’s benchmark to 1:10.2832s, before the Holden driver returned to set an unbeatable 1:10.2639s with one minute to go.
Davison’s earlier time held up for second ahead of David Reynolds, Cam Waters, Chaz Mostert, Scott Pye, Thomas Randle, Anton De Pasquale, Brodie Kostecki and James Golding.
Golding bumped Triple Eight’s Broc Feeney from the Shootout field after the chequered flag fell, despite light contact with Davison early in his final run.
The upcoming Top 10 run-off will mark the first ever Supercars Shootout appearance for both Golding and PremiAir Racing.
“It’s unbelievable. We’ve been improving and improving every time we hit the track,” said Golding.
“It’s been a little bit of a difficult one for us this weekend just trying to get the car into the right window and we didn’t even quite nail it then.
“I just had to work a bit harder inside the car with adjustments and stuff like that and just got through by the skin of our teeth. I’m super excited.”
It was a tough session for Brad Jones Racing, with 20th-placed Andre Heimgartner the fastest of the four BJR Commodores.
Heimgartner earned the wrath of van Gisbergen midway through proceedings when he appeared to hold up the Red Bull entry at Turn 4.
The Top 10 Shootout is scheduled for 11:35am local time.
