Victoria set to miss out on V8 Touring Cars

THE Kumho V8 Touring Car Series looks set to reset to four points-paying rounds in 2024 with no Victorian stop on the proposed calendar for next season.

However, it appears there will be a way for V8 Touring Car drivers to race their cars at Mount Panorama despite Bathurst not hosting a round next year.

A proposed calendar has been circulated to teams recently outlining a non-championship event to kick off the season as part of the Combined Sedans category at the Bathurst 12 Hour on February 16-18.

This means the series will be dropped from next year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst International. That event is being held this weekend with the Kumho V8 Touring Car Series’ last round of this season part of the list of categories.

Former Kumho Series runner-up Ryan Simpson is making a return to the series this weekend at Bathurst in Jim Pollicina’s second Commodore.

There are no Victorian circuits on the 2024 V8 Touring Car calendar. Sandown (Feb 9-11) and Phillip Island (April 12-14) are already pencilled in on the Shannons SpeedSeries draft calendar, though neither seem set to host the Kumho-backed series for ex-V8 Supercars.

Next year’s Kumho V8 Touring Car Series proper is proposed to begin at Race Tasmania at Symmons Plains on March 15-17, the first time the V8 Touring Car Series will have visited the circuit outside Launceston since its only previous visit in 2010.

Round 2 would be at Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at The Bend in May followed by Round 3 at Queensland Raceway in July.

The Bend last hosted a round of the series in 2019, the first year of four it ran under the ‘Super3’ banner.

The fourth and final round on the proposed calendar would be part of Race Sydney at Sydney Motorsport Park under lights supporting the TCR World Tour in November.
