Waters sets pace in Sunday Adelaide 500 qualifying

CAM Waters has begun his bid for redemption at the VALO Adelaide 500 by topping Sunday morning qualifying ahead of the Top 10 Shootout.

Waters scored pole on Saturday and controlled the first half of the race before a combination of fuel strategy and a penalty for an incident took him out of contention.

The Monster Energy Mustang driver sat sixth ahead of the final runs in this morning’s 15-minute qualifying session, before shooting to the top with a 1:19.1091s.

That put him 0.2589s clear of previous fast-man Shane van Gisbergen, who did not improve late in the going.

Anton De Pasquale and Chaz Mostert subsequently snuck into second and third respectively, the former just 0.0613s shy of the pace, bumping van Gisbergen to fourth.

Also locking in Shootout spots were Will Davison, Will Brown, Andre Heimgartner, Broc Feeney, Todd Hazelwood and David Reynolds.

Jack Le Brocq narrowly missed out on making it two Matt Stone Racing Holdens in 11th.

James Golding (12th), Thomas Randle (15th), James Courtney (18th) and Scott Pye (19th) all failed to repeat their top 10 efforts from Saturday.

By contrast, van Gisbergen is looking forward to starting further up the grid today after a mistake-riddled run from the back on Saturday.

“The car is still pretty hard to drive but we’re in the show this time,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ll stay somewhere in the front half of the 10 for the race, it’ll make things a bit easier than yesterday.

“My car is very difficult in qualifying trim but as a race car it’s awesome, hopefully I can get it right for one lap and make no mistakes and then in the race it’ll be ok.”

The Top 10 Shootout is set to take place from 12:05pm local time.
