WAU’s last chance to even Holden winning ledger with Triple Eight

SUNDAY race day at the VALO Adelaide 500 marks the final race for Holdens in the Repco Supercars Championship and it may see the brand’s two most winning teams end up equal on championship race wins for ‘the lion’.

Chaz Mostert’s win on Saturday in Adelaide moved his Walkinshaw Andretti United team to 188 ATCC/Supercars Championship race wins in Holdens since the team’s first under the Holden Racing Team banner at Eastern Creek with Peter Brock driving in 1994.

Mostert led home teammate Nick Percat to record a 1-2 finish on the streets of Adelaide, the team’s first 1-2 result at the Adelaide 500 and its first in the championship since Garth Tander led James Courtney home in Townsville in 2014 under the HRT banner.

The former factory Holden team has clawed its way back to within one race win of tying Triple Eight Race Engineering – the team that took over the factory Holden backing from 2017 onwards – and its record of most championship race wins in Holdens, which sits at 189 wins.

The Brisbane-based team made the move from Falcons to Holden Commodores in 2010 under the TeamVodafone banner and its race wins achieved with ‘the lion’ have it sitting on a total of 240 championship race wins overall.

Walkinshaw Andretti United will end its era of racing Holdens after today’s final race of the Repco Supercars Championship. Next year it makes the move to Ford Mustangs for next year’s debut season of Gen3 regulations.

WAU and Triple Eight are the only Holden Commodore teams to have won races in this year’s championship. Shane van Gisbergen has won a season-record 21 races and Mostert’s win this weekend was his fifth win of the season.

The last non-WAU/Triple Eight Commodore race winner was Will Brown’s Erebus Holden at Sydney Motorsport Park last year.

Next year will see GM represented by Chevrolet Camaro and Ford teams will race a new S650 Mustang.
