Xiberras on Webb: ‘The stopwatch doesn’t lie’

PETER Xiberras has explained why he believes former team owner Jonathon Webb will be an asset to PremiAir Racing at the biggest events of the season.

The 2016 Bathurst 1000 winner was a surprise choice to co-drive the #23 Nulon Camaro with Tim Slade, Joey Mawson having been first choice for the role before multiple factors ruled him out.

Webb owned the Tekno Autosports outfit for more than a decade before selling it to Xiberras in a deal announced January 2022, allowing for the formation of PremiAir Racing in Supercars.

Now the duo will join forces, as Xiberras eyes a maiden Great Race top 10 result. Before that is his first Sandown 500, next week.

“We put a few guys in the car and Webby, the stopwatch doesn’t lie,” Xiberras told V8 Sleuth recently.

“The thing I like about Jono is, love him, hate him, whatever, the guy can drive.

“He has done it many times and I believe he is the sort of guy who has got nothing to prove so if the engineer says ‘right, I want you to do these times’ he will just stick to it.

“The idea is he will circulate, hopefully keep the mirrors on the thing and hand it over and hopefully have a good day.

“I think he will be a very good, mature resource for us.”
