Adderton relinquishes Triple Eight Camaro

PETER Adderton no longer owns a Gen3 Supercar.

V8 Sleuth can reveal the news which has put the likelihood of a Boost Mobile wildcard in grave doubt.

Adderton struck a deal with Triple Eight Race Engineering at last year’s Gold Coast 500 to buy a brand-new Chevrolet Camaro to be built by the Brisbane powerhouse.

That initially came with a view to running the car full-time in 2023, if he could attain a Teams Racing Charter, or at least as a wildcard at various events.

Adderton had been keen to push on the with the latter option even after his TRC dream was put on the backburner for at least another year and Richie Stanaway was signed by Triple Eight to partner Shane van Gisbergen in the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000.

Earlier this month Stanaway hinted at the continued possibility of a solo wildcard at Surfers Paradise in late October.

As recently as last week, Adderton told V8 Sleuth “if we can’t race it, we don’t want it” – but that “if (Supercars) tell us that we can race it, then we’re full steam ahead”.

However, a Boost wildcard would now depend on borrowing a car.

That’s because Adderton and Triple Eight have agreed to cut ties on the fourth of the Gen3 chassis in its Banyo workshop (named 888A-064).

Triple Eight was tight-lipped on the matter beyond confirming the chassis, which is yet to be built into a complete car, has indeed changed ownership.

Triple Eight’s third Camaro recently debuted in Darwin as a Supercheap Auto wildcard driven by Zane Goddard.

Its first two are the Red Bull Ampol entries of van Gisbergen and Broc Feeney.
