Allen out to banish Adelaide demons

KAI Allen is fired up to make amends for the blunder that cost him the Super3 title when he returns to racing on the streets of Adelaide next week.

Allen was destined to win the 2022 third-tier crown until crashing out of the final race of the season at Adelaide’s notorious Turn 8.

Brad Vaughan swooped to be crowned Super3 champion, before both stepped up for 2023.

Almost 12 months on, Allen is the hunter in a tight Super2 title race, trailing Zak Best by just 30 points.

“Last year, I think losing it on the last race has really fuelled me to keep going and keep pushing this year,” said 18-year-old Allen, who hails from Mount Gambier.

“So to win the championship, especially being my first year, that would be absolutely unbelievable, and also to be the youngest ever, that would be a very cool thing to have in your books.”

That’s something of an evolution from how he spoke about the bigger picture prize after the penultimate round last month at Bathurst.

“This year is all about learning because I’m quite new to a Supercar,” he said at the time.

“Super3 last year came down to the wire and I was able to learn a lot from that year and put it into this.

“I’m just going there not too fussed about the championship, Zak has been strong all year, so just do the best I can and the gods will decide.”

It had been a particularly big Bathurst for Allen, who dovetailed his Super2 duties with being the centrepiece of a Dick Johnson Racing wildcard in the Great Race.

“Now that I have got another taste of it to see what it’s all about, I can’t wait to hopefully get in the main game one day,” he said.

Allen is expected to continue with Eggleston Motorsport in Super2 next year and step up to co-driving the Shell V-Power #17 Mustang, before a mooted full-time graduation in 2025.
