Bathurst 12 Hour driver inspires new blockbuster film

THE former Bathurst 12 Hour teammate of Todd Kelly and 2015 winner Florian Strauss has inspired a soon-to-be-released movie.

Jann Mardenborough’s journey from gamer to professional racer is the narrative upon which the upcoming Gran Turismo movie is based.

The Brit beat 90,000 rivals to win the 2011 GT Academy competition – utilising the Gran Turismo video game – and secure a Nissan drive at the Dubai 24 Hour.

From there, his real-life racing career took off.

By 2013 he had jagged a class podium in the 24 Hours of Le Mans; the following year he became a GP3 Series race winner after finishing runner-up in the Toyota Racing Series.

Now 31, Mardenborough contested the 2017 Bathurst 12 Hour, combining with Kelly and Strauss to finish outright eighth aboard a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.

Due to be released in August this year, the Gran Turismo movie is based on the true story of Mardenborough.

The film has been directed by Neill Blomkamp and features a star-studded cast including Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, David Harbour and Geri Halliwell.

Halliwell, famously known as Ginger Spice from the Spice Girls, is a familiar figure to motorsport fans for her prominence in Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive, alongside husband and Red Bull F1 team principal Christian Horner.
