Brown hails ‘best race of my life’

WILL Brown has labelled his charge to victory in Race 2 of the Taupō Super400 the best race of his life.

From fifth, Brown picked off his competitors one by one, none more spectacularly than the eventual prolonged battle for the lead with his Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney.

A sustained period of attack culminated in Brown making the race-winning move on Lap 53 of 60.

“I think I bumped him once – accidentally – down there, but I think he held a bit of brake to make out that I bumped him a bit harder!” the #87 driver said post-race.

“It was cool: he’s playing the game, so am I.

“There’s not meant to be any contact. It was bloody hard not to do contact then because with the tyre life I had I was so much faster mid-corner, you were like waiting a long time.

“But I think no matter what, if it was our team or another team, that was an awesome battle.

“That was the best race of my life, I reckon; it was awesome.”

Brown joked he’d feared “a first written warning” and elaborated on the patience required during the entertaining squabble.

“I didn’t want to bump him and put him off, or put both of us off. It was really hard,” he continued.

“I just worked him a little bit out of Turn 9. I was getting a better run and I was putting him in the marbles into Turn 11 and getting a bit of dirt on his tyres and playing the game.

“He said after to me, ‘I knew what you were doing there’. It was cool. I just think that was an awesome battle no matter what, I absolutely loved it.”

Brown now leads the championship by 71 points from Feeney at the one-quarter mark of the championship.
