Dick Johnson to debut new Mustang at Bathurst

AUSTRALIAN motorsport legend Dick Johnson has been announced as the first driver to steer the new Gen3 Ford Mustang Supercar.

The updated S650 shape will be revealed in the flesh on Thursday at Bathurst, with Johnson to then hop behind the wheel.

The Blue Oval prototype had previously appeared in S550 trim.

“My team and I have been racing Fords for more than forty years, we are very proud representatives of and ambassadors for the Blue Oval,” said Johnson, whose DJR squad is Supercars’ designated Ford homologation team.

“We have been working extremely hard on making this car the best it can possibly be over the last couple of years, and to be the first person in the world to drive it after all of that work is fantastic.

“Any chance to drive around Mount Panorama is incredible, but to do it in Ford’s latest race car is an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up.

“I can’t wait to drive the Mustang and see the fans across the top of the Mountain, it’s going to be very special indeed.”

The opportunity comes 20 years on from when Johnson debuted the BA-model Ford Falcon V8 Supercar at Mount Panorama.

More recently, Johnson hopped behind the wheel of the Gen2 Mustang at its maiden event, the 2019 Adelaide 500, and again as part of a Queensland Raceway outing where he shared the track with son Steven and grandson Jett.
