Ex-Nissan Super2 rookie’s next step revealed

PROMISING 2022 Super2 rookie Thomas Maxwell has opted for a different route for his Supercars dream, committing to a return to Porsche Carrera Cup Australia.

Steering an MW Motorsport Nissan, Maxwell last August became just the fourth driver in a 16-year window to claim a pole position in his maiden Super2 season.

He finished seventh in the overall standings but will be absent from the Supercars second tier this year.

Maxwell was a regular top 10 finisher in Carrera Cup 2019 and will be aiming higher this time around after inking a deal with TekworkX Motorsport.

TekworkX tasted victory last year in Townsville via Luke Youlden while teammate Max Vidau recorded six top-three finishes across the season.

“It’s going to be a pretty exciting year. I’m really keen to see what this new(-for-2022) car is about, I’ve heard everyone talking about it and seen it for quite a while so I’m keen to jump in and get a feel for it,” Maxwell told V8 Sleuth.

“They definitely seem a lot quicker, a lot more stable but a little bit different to drive so there’s going to be a little bit of a learning curve amongst it all but I’m pretty pleased with the team and I definitely know they can deliver some strong results, which they did last year.

“They have got some exciting stuff in the works in terms of trying to get a little bit more out of the car so I’m excited to be a part of that.”

Coming off his 2022 campaign, Maxwell feels more confident than ever about his ability behind the wheel and is by no means giving up on his Supercars ambitions.

“My goal hasn’t changed, it is still set on Supercars and making it to the main game one way or another. This is just a bit of a different route for me,” he added.

“I think this is a way of getting more miles, still being out there, still being relevant, still racing – in probably the most competitive championship Australia has got at the moment.”

The eight-round 2023 calendar kicks off at Albert Park across March 30 to April 2.
