Ford rebadging Gen3 Mustangs

CAM Waters’ Tickford Racing Mustang underwent a late change before the Newcastle 500 opener and the rest of the Ford fleet will soon follow suit.

The tweak is highly noticeable but purely aesthetic – Ford opting to swap the black Mustang badge in the grill for a chrome version.

Ford had supplied all its teams with black examples of the iconic Mustang ‘pony’ badges for the Gen3 era.

Although the road going GT model on which the Supercar is based has the traditional chrome badge, certain models – including the Dark Horse track pack – run black.

However, Ford has opted to change back to the traditional chrome based on the fact the black does not show up well on television.

Waters’ car received a chrome badge for the Newcastle opener as it started on the front-row of the grid and all will make the switch by Albert Park.

The Blue Oval has a significant presence at the Newcastle 500, including global Ford Performance Mark Rushbrook and Ford Australia President and CEO, Andrew Birkic.

Ford Performance has been highly involved in the development of the Gen3 Mustang, including conflict with Supercars over aerodynamic and engine parity.

The Gen3 Mustang race car more closely resembles the road going model, while the new rules have also allowed a move to a race version of the 5.4-litre Coyote engine.
