Fullwood studying up to end Symmons hoodoo

BRYCE Fullwood makes no secret of the fact Symmons Plains has not been kind to him.

In four previous rounds in Tasmania aboard Supercars machinery – two in Super2, two in the main game – Fullwood has never finished a race higher than 15th.

Entering this weekend in form having been arguably Brad Jones Racing’s fastest driver at the previous two rounds, Fullwood is eager to turn his Symmons Plains fortunes around.

“Tasmania is actually a track I struggled a bit at last year,” he said.

“So yeah, I’m doing a lot of homework going into this weekend.

“I think we had pretty good speed there with Andre (Heimgartner) last year. So I think if I can do my job there, hopefully we can work it out.

“We need to work out what things correlate between AGP and Perth and then into Tassie and see what we can come up with and hopefully we get something a little bit faster for the race.”

Team owner Brad Jones is targeting a form reversal after a tough run for his four-car squad in Perth.

“Symmons Plains is a place we have performed well at over the years so I’m really looking forward to getting down there,” Jones said.

“There is enough degradation in the track surface that strategy will come into play.

“And I’m hoping that we get back on track, we’ve had a really strong start to the year however we did have a difficult time in Perth.

“I felt that by the time we got to Race 2 we were starting to get the cars under control and then Race 3 we didn’t progress – so looking forward to starting again.

“It’s going to be a two-day format so there’s not going to be a lot of time. Hopefully we’ll have the cars on track and ready to compete for a top 10 position.”

One BJR driver for whom Symmons Plains has been a relatively happy hunting ground in the past is Jack Smith.

Smith has had a miserable start to the Gen3 era, but has shown pace in Tasmania before, and it’s also the location where he claimed his sole Super2 top three race result.

“I’m looking forward to Tassie, it’s one of my favourite rounds,” he said.

“I like going to Tassie and I don’t mind the track there. I’ve been fast in the past so I hope that we can get on top of the car out of the gate.”

Opening practice for the Repco Supercars Championship gets underway on Saturday morning.
