Godzilla duo enter Bathurst museum

THE only two Nissans to conquer Australia’s Great Race have gone on display at Mount Panorama.

Nicknamed Godzilla, the Skyline GT-R model powered Gibson Motorsport’s Jim Richards and Mark Skaife to back-to-back Bathurst 1000 victories in 1991 and 1992.

The ’91 triumph marked the first time that a Japanese brand had won the prestigious event, Richards/Skaife soaring to victory with a lap in hand.

They backed it up the following year in controversial circumstances that led to Richards’ infamous “pack of arseholes” remark.

The twin-turbo Group A beasts have now joined the vast collection at the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst, where they will reside until the end of the year.

“We’re very pleased to announce that the 1991 and 1992 Bathurst 1000 winning Nissan Skyline GTRs are now on display at the National Motor Racing Museum, as part of our look at the 60-year history of the Great Race here at Mount Panorama!” read a museum announcement via social media.

“Don’t miss this incredibly rare opportunity to see two of the most spectacular race cars of the 1990s at the museum.

“Huge thanks go to the owner for allowing us to display the two cars together for the remainder of 2023.

“We’ll have a closer look around the cars individually over the coming few days!”

This year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 marks 60 years since the first Great Race held at Mount Panorama.
