Phillip Island to host new GT Festival

A NEW GT Festival will be launched this year at Phillip Island.

Both GT World Challenge Australia and GT4 Australia will feature at the August 23-25 event – the first to be promoted by SRO Motorsports Australia.

The Australian Production Car Series has also been confirmed as a support category.

Previously, there had been a TBC on various calendars (including GTWC and GT4) which was set to be a SpeedSeries round at an unannounced location.

That has been replaced by SRO’s GT Festival, meaning the 2024 SpeedSeries has been condensed from an initial 10-round draft to now sit at eight events (one of the Sydney Motorsport Park rounds was also culled after it became clear the TCR World Tour would not return).

Given that the GT Festival sits outside of the SpeedSeries framework, broadcast details may differ – per SRO communications, they will be announced in due course.

Phillip Island last month hosted a SpeedSeries round where both GTWC and GT4 appeared.

“Launching the SRO-promoted GT Festival event allows us to continue to build the profile of both our Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS and the Monochrome GT4 Series in Australia” said SRO Motorsports Australia CEO Ben McMellan.

“This final piece of our 2024 calendar is a great addition.

“A GT-centric motorsport event at Phillip Island is the ideal place for these cars as it’s a track that shows the true capability of both GT3 and GT4 cars.

“The circuit is clearly a favourite amongst our teams and drivers, and they are looking forward to more track time there.

“All eyes are now on The Bend for Round 2. The first round at Phillip Island provided great racing and a big crowd, and we hope to see just as many people trackside at The Bend and the GT Festival in August.”

Action at Tailem Bend will unfold on May 31 to June 2.

From there, GTWC Australia heads to Queensland Raceway (August 2-4), the Island (August 23-25), SMP (October 18-20) and Mount Panorama for the Bathurst International on November 8-10.
