TODD Hazelwood will race this weekend after all, despite reverting to the bench at Erebus Motorsport.
With 2023 champion Brodie Kostecki making a shock return to Erebus, Hazelwood will not make the trek across the ditch for Supercars’ ITM Taupó Super400.
Instead, he will be back behind the wheel of the #111 TFH Hire Ford Mustang for the second successive weekend.
Fresh off a third-place round result in Trico Trans Am at Phillip Island, Hazelwood will now line up as part of a 20-car field in the TA2 Muscle Car Series opener at Sydney Motorsport Park.
“It was a golden opportunity for me to do some extra race laps,” said Hazelwood.
“Obviously being committed to Erebus Motorsport at the beginning of the year I had originally planned to go to Taupō this weekend, so going to Sydney wasn’t originally on my radar but it’s been a quick change of events and I am really keen to get stuck into it with the TFH Racing Team, as well as supporting Josh Thomas who will also be racing there this weekend.
“It has been a real fun and exciting category to be a part of, I have been enjoying it.
“It has been a while since I have driven a different style of race car outside of Supercars for some years now so it has definitely been a new challenge and the team at TFH Racing have been super welcoming and inviting.”
There will be four TA2 races across the weekend at SMP.
Following David Russell’s surprise defection to PremiAir Racing, Hazelwood is expected to co-drive with Kostecki at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 while Jayden Ojeda is the favourite to partner Jack Le Brocq in the #9 entry.
