Heimgartner unfazed by winless podiums

SIX podiums in 2023. Ten since joining Brad Jones Racing. But still victory eludes Andre Heimgartner.

Close but no cigar has been the theme for the Kiwi for quite some time now – besides his 2021 win at The Bend for Kelly Grove Racing – but he insists it’s not a situation that bothers him in the slightest.

“We’re obviously trying to win but we’re trying to get that consistency which is the main thing that has sort of eluded us,” said Heimgartner, who is well on pace to better his career-best championship ranking (10th last year).

“We’ve had poles and a win before. I’m not too stressed about it, it will come if we keep putting the car on the front row or the first couple of rows, the win will come eventually.

“Maybe when he (van Gisbergen) stuffs off it might be a bit easier but it’s alright, I’m not too stressed about it.”

Heimgartner was in the hunt for victory in both legs of the Sydney SuperNight on the weekend.

A one-stop strategy had him on track to get the job done on Saturday night before a Safety Car foiled those plans, leaving him to settle for 14th.

He again qualified on the front row yesterday and this time led the early laps before being passed by eventual winner Shane van Gisbergen.

“We good got a good start which was a big focus after (Saturday) and then I just put my head down,” Heimgartner recounted.

“Had a bit of a fight with Shane and decided just to back off to conserve the tyres and just trying to consolidate.

“The car was pretty speedy. Not quite enough to catch Shane in the end but really happy to come home with another podium.”

BJR’s last win came in 2020 via Nick Percat, at Sydney Motorsport Park.
