Kelly’s influence on Super2 dark horse

BATHURST 1000 winner Todd Kelly’s advice for Supercars aspirant Aaron Cameron has been simple. Literally.

Cameron has made a name for himself in Australian motorsport in recent years by being a consistent frontrunner in TCR and S5000 competitions.

He picked up a maiden Super2 gig in mid-2023 aboard a semi-privately run Kelly Racing Mustang, and showed enough to become fully entrenched in a two-car KR Super2 effort for this season.

One round into his first full campaign, Cameron is second in the standings, only behind Eggleston Motorsport star Kai Allen.

“I suppose what I pick up from Todd these days is actually just keeping it simple,” Cameron, who finished second and fourth in the two races at the Bathurst season-opener, said of his decorated team owner’s influence.

“He’s a quietly spoken guy but we just try to have fun.

“The main thing is to have fun, go well, but it’s more just keeping it simple.

“It’s something I always like to do but I’m especially focusing on it this year and focusing on the long run of the series, not bombing under anyone too early.”

Consistency is a trait which Cameron has quickly exhibited – contrary to many in the talented but raw Super2 field – and he has eight top 10 results from as many starts in the category to show for it.

“I’m 24, so I have got a few more years than these guys,” he said.

“I couldn’t get the Super2 budget together for a while and I raced a hell of a lot of other categories, so I have got good respect for what needs to be done and what needs to be done for a series.

“All weekend (at Bathurst) I was not cruising but playing it safe, like there’s no need to put the car in the fence or anything like that.

“We’re just going around, getting points, top five was the goal; we got a second and a fourth, so it’s happy days for us.”

A race-winning driver and team owner at main game level, Kelly Sr is also fielding teen son Mason in Super2 this year.

Round 2 of the 2024 Dunlop Series will take place at Wanneroo Raceway in May.
