Kostecki nominated for coveted award

BRODIE Kostecki is in the running to be crowned Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year.

The Supercars champion hails from Western Australia but is Queensland-based these days.

It was a breakthrough 2023 for the 26-year-old, who went from having never won a main game race to sealing the title in the space of eight months.

He also made his NASCAR Cup Series debut for Richard Childress Racing, impressively qualifying 11th at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and recovering from the rear to finish 22nd.

Kostecki is currently at the centre of a standoff with Erebus Motorsport which will see him miss the 2024 Supercars season-opener, but he’s been recognised in the form of a nomination for Sports Gold Coast’s top award.

Among his competitors for the gong will be Mackenzie Arnold (soccer), Ellie Beer (athletics), Ali Day (surf lifesaving), Ethan Ewing (surfing), Kate Kyros (equestrian), Madison Levi (rugby sevens), Rosie Malone (hockey), Hayley Raso (soccer) and 2023 recipient Jai Opetaia (boxing).

“The awards night is certainly to celebrate and honour our athletes, but it also brings together the threads of sport right throughout our community at all different levels,” said Sports Gold Coast chairman Geoff Smith.

“Sports Gold Coast is proud to support this major event and strives to make the Gold Coast Sports Star Awards one of the most prestigious in our nation, renowned for its uniqueness and quality of finalists leading up to the 2032 Olympics.”

The 55th Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards will take place on March 9 at Royal Pines.
