Mostert splits Red Bulls in Bathurst Shootout

BROC Feeney has put himself in pole position to back up his Saturday victory at the Thrifty Bathurst 500 as Chaz Mostert prevented another Triple Eight one-two.

Having lost out to teammate Will Brown in the Saturday Top 10 Shootout, Feeney got the job done today with a 2:06.5465s.

Just as he did yesterday, Nick Percat led off the Shootout by laying down a solid if unspectacular starting point: 2:07.4624s.

Margins were tight initially with less than a tenth separating the first four participants, led by Jack Le Brocq from Thomas Randle, who grazed the wall on his run down the Mountain.

James Golding was the first to break clear of the pack, dipping into the ‘sixes’ to grab the upper hand by 0.4272s.

That proved too much for subsequent runners David Reynolds and Anton De Pasquale, before Mostert seized the advantage with an electrifying 2:06.6453s.

Brown came close but was unable to knock off Mostert, meaning there wouldn’t be another Triple Eight front-row lockout, leaving just Feeney to come.

The #88 Red Bull Ampol driver had just enough up his sleeve, pipping Mostert by 0.0988s.

“I think that (yesterday) was five or six second-place starts at Bathurst in a row, so I was pretty keen to get a pole here,” said Feeney.

“My first two sectors were pretty good and I just tried to bring it home in the last one. I’m pumped for the team, I love the look of the orange numbers on there.

“My start wasn’t great yesterday and Chaz had a good one, so we’ll try and get a good launch today and run into Turn 1 and see what happens.

“But we’ve got a real fast race car so I’m looking forward to getting out there and having some fun.”

That leaves the first five rows this arvo to line up as: Feeney and Mostert, Brown and Golding, Reynolds and Le Brocq, Randle and Will Davison, Percat and De Pasquale.

Race 2 of the Thrifty Bathurst 500 will start at 3:05pm, comprising 40-laps.
